Inhale. Exhale. That’s All.

“It’s ok to be scared. Being scared means you’re about to do something really, really brave.”

This is a mantra someone shared with me a short time ago and it arrived in my in-box at just the perfect time.  Owning a yoga studio was not on my life’s agenda. When I worked at Lululemon for a hot minute about 9 years ago, they asked me to write down my goals for the year, 5 years, 10 years, and hang them on a wall for all to see (for me to hold myself “accountable” they said).  I literally laughed out loud and told them I wasn’t ready to share that. Really though, I think it was because I hadn’t actually PLANNED for anything. I had been married for awhile, was toting around a baby on each hip and had just moved from city to suburbia after closing a couple businesses my husband and I each owned individually.  I had no idea what the future would hold.

I have now been practicing yoga for 10 years, teaching for 7 and have loved every single moment of my journey. I completed a few teacher training programs and have spent many hours since then on my mat as a student, learning something new each and every time. I have met a community of like-minded people, made friends with teachers near and far and have curated relationships that have enriched my life beyond words. And even though I’m wearing many hats these days as wife, mother, teacher and studio owner, I truly try to live my life one day at a time.

I feel so blessed to have been introduced to yoga when I was, and that it has really allowed me to shine.  I want you all to stay on this beautifully enlightened path with me,  let’s see where it takes us together!

My goal is to create a space at Reach where everyone feels as happy as I am to be there. I plan to share my love of all things yoga with whomever steps through our doors.  Let your love for whatever it is you do, be so pure and so big that its shifts the energy in the room.

Welcome. Join me.

Namaste, Laura

Some News (Change Is Good)

My dear Reach Yoga friends:

I am delighted to let you know that yoga teacher Laura Merlo and I have reached an agreement under which she will become the sole owner of Reach Yoga, effective December 18, 2018.

Leading Reach Yoga for the past 6+ years has been a pleasure and a privilege. I’ve learned so much and really become a different person, thanks to the opportunity to contribute to our yoga community. THANK YOU. At this point I am ready to move on to other pursuits, and the studio can benefit from some fresh energy and ideas.

Laura is the ideal person to take Reach Yoga to the next level of prosperity. In addition to her status as a truly beloved yoga teacher, Laura has experience as a business owner and designer. She has done great work on our yoga programming and merchandising. She is eager to take on the challenge of making Reach Yoga an ever-improving source of strength and serenity for our students, teachers, and staff.

What will change at Reach? I’ll let Laura speak to you directly about that, but I can tell you that Laura has enormous respect for Reach Yoga as it exists today. She will continue to value the students and teachers of Reach Yoga. Allison and Marika will continue to do the amazing work they do. The new ideas and strategies Laura offers will build on our strengths while improving and enhancing our community.

In the meantime, your membership is still valid; any classes you have paid for are still on file; teacher training will commence in January with Paul, Deb, and Sharyn leading the faculty; and the yoga class and event schedule remains as is for now (evolving each season as always).

Next steps? Laura and I have already begun to transition my responsibilities to her, and that work will continue over the next month or so. Beginning today, feel free to contact Laura for any questions or concerns that would normally come to me. (You are also welcome to reach out to me directly, of course!)

After December 18, don’t think you’re getting rid of me–Laura has graciously offered Bob and me ongoing yoga memberships at Reach, so you’ll see us in class. 🙂

Keep calm and yoga on! Namaste ~

Reach Yoga / Unify Fitness Partnership

New – more space for private yoga. Our studio is jam-packed with classes, leaving little time for you to work one-on-one with an instructor. Reach Yoga has partnered with Unify Fitness to use its lovely new studio for private yoga instruction. It’s just one block south of us (where Books on Vernon used to be).

If you are interested in private yoga instruction, please let us know what you are seeking here.

Coming soon: Additional class offerings that blend strength, cardio, and yoga, in the Unify studio. Watch for news! At least for a while, you’ll be able to use Reach Yoga membership or classes on file for these new classes.

Finally, if you would like to add some personal training or different kinds of classes to to your physical fitness regimen, consider checking out Unify.

Owners Melissa and Leslie are ready to help you meet your goals.

Fall 2018 Schedule Preview

Becky Wontor-Coleman

Every season, our schedule of weekly classes changes, either a little or a lot. Teachers sometimes need to move on from a class they’ve been teaching, whether it’s for personal reasons or simply that the class hasn’t found a committed audience.

I am happy to say that for fall of 2018, our jam-packed schedule of classes is changing only in that it is growing. Your favorite teachers and classes remain, and you’ll find additional chances to grow your yoga practice, including …

  • New weekly classes:
    • Vinyasa Level 1, Thursdays 5:15-6:15pm with Becky Wontor-Coleman (Reach Yoga studio, beginning 9/13)
    • Gentle Flow, Mondays & Thursdays 11:00am-12:15pm with Judy Roin (at the Takiff Center, beginning 9/17)

Laura Friedman

  • New Yoga for Kids program, Wednesdays 4:00-5:00pm with Nichola Roberts-Jones (at the Winnetka Community House, 9/12 – 10/17)
  • New monthly Restorative Yoga, Sundays 1:00-2:15pm with Laura Friedman (at the Reach Yoga studio, 9/30, 10/28, 11/25, & 12/30)
  • Terrific workshops and special events with some of your favorite teachers, including Cheri Weber, Laura Merlo, Mia Cutler, Colleen Yeloushan, Judy Craven, & Sonya Taylor
  • New foundational yoga courses for those who wish to start or re-start a regular practice. Several programs are targeted to specific audiences, including athletes, parents of young children, and those seeking better daily function. Something for everyone!

Jenny Guzon-Bae

Since everyone’s fall schedule fills up quickly, if any of these interests you, please mark your calendar now, so that you can work other events around your most important self-care commitments.

Also a reminder: We have a few classes that were added during the summer and will remain this fall. We are delighted to have Jenny Guzon-Bae back on the schedule (Fridays 9:30-10:45am), and two weekly chances to practice with Sonya Taylor (Tuesdays 6:30-7:30pm, and Thursdays 11:30am-12:30pm).  View current schedule

Best wishes for an enjoyable summer (there’s still plenty left!!!). Here’s hoping that you keep practicing, and prepare for a terrific fall season of yoga.

xo, Dani

Upcoming Guest Instructors @Reach

Late summer is a busy travel season, and many of our instructors are spending time with their families.

While many students travel also, we know some of you remain in town to enjoy our beautiful summer right here. And we would hate to cancel class and negatively impact your yoga practice.

So Reach Yoga will host several guest instructors in late summer:

  • Tuesday, 7/31, 1:15-2:15pm: Becky Wontor-Coleman
  • Thursday 8/2 1:30-2:30: Beth Mulhern
  • Monday 8/13, 5:15-6:15pm: Chelle Costianis
  • Thursday, 8/16, 11:30am: Melissa Novack

If you have an opportunity to attend one of these classes, please let us know if you are able to learn something new from one of these talented instructors.

You Did It

Isn’t it great to see the retail spaces in Glencoe filling up? All North Shore residents benefit from access to a vibrant, interesting Glencoe that features a variety of restaurants, services, entertainment, and merchandise.

We believe Reach Yoga plays an important role in attracting neighbors to downtown Glencoe, and bringing the broader community together.  This year we’ve seen more than 1700 student visits each month, on average. That means more opportunities to greet and connect with one another, to notice and patronize local businesses, and to keep an eye on the kiddos.

This week, Reach Yoga celebrated six years in Glencoe. After our launch in 2012 (with only about 2 classes per day!), we are here and thriving, thanks to you.  We are here because you

  • prioritize your yoga practice and come to class
  • tell friends about the studio and your favorite classes and teachers
  • give us feedback about how we can better serve the community’s needs

Some Reach Yoga students in their everyday lives …

THANK YOU for supporting Reach Yoga and our teachers and staff.

We have so much planned for you this fall and beyond, including

  • even more weekly classes
  • enlightening workshops and inspiring, rewarding events
  • a variety of courses to bring yoga to those who have not yet experienced its benefits (tell your yoga-needing friends)
  • a 200-hour yoga training program, for those who wish to dramatically deepen their practice on and off the mat

Watch for details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here’s a little anniversary treat: On August 1-5 only, use promo code SIXYEARS for $20 off 10 or 20 yoga classes, or an upcoming series, when you buy online.

For monthly members only, please email dani@reachyogaglencoe.com if you would like to claim a free workshop or event this fall.

We hope you’ll prioritize your wellness in a yoga class soon … so please view our latest schedule, sign up for a class (maybe a new one??), and we’ll see you in the studio. Namaste.

Recently at Reach Yoga: Maybe, Someday

Recently, someone approached me with some interest in buying Reach Yoga.

Running Reach remains rewarding and fun. At the same time, after almost six years, it seems worthwhile to consider whether some new investment, along with fresh ideas and energy, might benefit our customers and community.

So … I plan to meet with the interested party. I promise to let you know if any change is coming. If you don’t hear anything, just assume all is staying the same.

And, if anyone reading this would like to explore the possibility of owning a thriving yoga studio, please let me know. If I am going to consider one proposal, it makes sense to surface and explore multiple options–to find the best overall path forward for our community. Let me know by June 10 if you’d like to learn more.

No interest in running a yoga studio? Just want to keep practicing? Then the main thing for you to know is that I am committed to keeping Reach Yoga open, whether led by me or (maybe, someday) someone else.

Because: The divine light in me loves the divine light in each and every one of you.

About Yoga Classes at Additional Locations

Have questions about yoga classes at the Winnetka Community Center or the Glencoe Park District? Maybe this will help –

Q. Why are you running classes at additional locations?

Both Winnetka Community House and the Glencoe Park District were seeking assistance offering high quality yoga, and we are thrilled to be involved in bringing great yoga to their communities. It helps our students too. We have only one studio space at 688 Vernon. In order to offer more than one type of level of class at popular times, we need additional space.

Q. When and where are the new classes?

Check our schedule of everything, or from our menu, choose the specific schedule you’d like to view.

Q. Can I use my Reach Yoga membership, or classes on file, to attend classes at these locations?

For the Takiff Center, YES. For the Winnetka Community House, please register and pay on their website (try this link).

Q. Does Reach Yoga benefit financially from running these classes?

Well that remains to be seen! 🙂 We hope so. Our teachers receive the largest share of the revenue (as they should), and the location and Reach Yoga split the rest.

Q. Where should I park at the Winnetka Community House?

Most classes are in room 212, which is upstairs. Closest parking is the lot behind the community house; enter the lot from Pine Street (near Green Bay Road) or from Lincoln Avenue (just south of the Community House). If you need to stop by the Fitness Center desk to purchase a drop-in class, you may prefer to park in the lot on Pine Street (or on Pine Street itself). **If you have trouble finding parking,** please send me an email to let me know–and I will alert WCH.

Possible Expansion? Your Input

While we love our space at 688 Vernon, it has two flaws:

  • Only one yoga studio
  • No space for childcare

We are currently exploring partnerships with nearby locations, so that we can offer greater variety of classes at peak times as well as some childcare options.

–> If our current schedule isn’t meeting all your or your family’s yoga needs right now, please complete this survey. <–

If you are happy with our schedule as it is, then yoga on! We’ll see you on the mat.

Namaste,

Dani
