Yoga Tour: Washington Island, WI

Recently I spent a week on Washington Island, a 5×5-square-mile island north of Door County, Wisconsin.

While the Island is mostly rural and sparsely inhabited throughout the year, in July and August it is flooded with summer residents and visitors … and there is plenty to do, including excellent yoga.

I practiced two times with Sarah at the yoga studio at the Washington Hotel. Sarah taught a slow flow which was quite challenging. And while the poses and sequences were comfortably familiar, Sarah offered some fresh cues too — I especially enjoyed being reminded to “fold right into your lap.”

In addition to yoga, our family spent time on stand-up paddleboards; attended musical events, including a classical concert and a songwriters festival; cheered on the local baseball team; and ate a lot of farm-to-table food (some at the Hotel, some at the excellent Island Cafe, and some at our own kitchen table).

Someday I’d love to help host a yoga retreat on the Island. A challenge is that it’s pretty far — about a five-hour drive to the Northport pier, and then a half-hour ferry ride. Definitely worth it for four days or longer. What do you think? Would Reach Yoga students sign up for a trip like that? If there’s enough interest, maybe next fall would be a good time.

In the meantime, have you scheduled your yoga for the coming week? If you are out of town, the MindBody app can help find great classes. If you’re in town, please check our schedule. Namaste.

xo, Dani
